BARCAT—the Bay Area Religious Campaign Against Torture—is an interfaith membership organization established in 2007 as the Northern California voice of the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, NRCAT. BARCAT members include representatives from Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, and other faith communities, all united in the unequivocal conviction that torture is morally wrong.

    Our Mission

Working with NRCAT, our mission is to end U.S.-sponsored torture forever. To further this goal, we are committed to …

    • Raising awareness in Northern California faith communities of U.S.-sponsored torture in the United States and around the world.
    • Calling for investigation and prosecution of violations of national and international laws against torture.
    • Supporting legislative and presidential action  designed to end the use and support of torture by the United States.

We are building a grassroots coalition to educate our communities about U.S.-sponsored torture and to represent to our legislators and other government officials the common moral concerns reflected in our faith traditions.
